Digiscoping with the Nikon V1 (1 Viewer)

If I want to get a little more magnification, would I be better to buy a longer lens - e.g. the 30-110mm - or use a higher magnification eyepiece? In other words which option would be most likely to produce the best quality, all things being equal.

Exactly what I was wondering. I have the swarovski 25-50x, so I think the 30-110mm may be overkill. At 50x and 110mm, this would give a FOV equivalent to 297x magnification!

It may be useful at more sensible settings though.

You are normally better off using a higher mag eyepiece than zooming the camera lens but when it comes to which lens to use it depends on what range you need.
I have shot the 10-30 mm lens on the 30x and the zooms ( kowa 20-60 and Swaro 25-50 ) and find that the zooms are the way to go if you want distance.
I don't want to zoom the lens over half zoom ( normally 40% zoom ).
The 30-110 mm zoom gets a good wrap , but you are right it is way too much for a normall eyepiece. I have used it with the Kowa VA3 (14x) and it's a good fit for medium distance and well as HD video.

A few more images with the V1, taken over the weekend in bright but windy conditions. Feel I've made some good progress, with a much higher ratio of successful shots - mainly thanks the the excellent advice received here so thanks to all. I also made two other changes; I turned off the vibration reduction and used the 32x eyepiece for most of these with a lower lens zoom setting.

These look good Malcolm.

Testing the Nikon V1

Some pictures taken today with the 10-30 lens & Swarovski 80 20X EP. The closer ones were at 15M / 20M. The Rooks were 50M / 60M

Here's a couple more taken last year (when the weather was a bit better) with the V1 and the 30-110 mm lens. Distance was 50 - 90 meters.

We finally had a glimpse of some sun today so I headed over to the local park with the V1.
These were taken with the Kowa VA3 again and the Nikon 30-110 mm zoom kit lens. I'm really liking this combo.

Excellent detail and this looks like a winning
combination. I quickly tried the V1 yesterday
and will report back as time permits.

Neil how far were you away for the second shot?

Thanks
