Simple really - big shoot, lots of dead pheasants, the shooters/beaters/watchers take what they want but still some left over. Can't be arsed to take to local butcher (if indeed there is one!) so dump on way home.

I found a brace dumped by the side of the road here on a run - gave to a friend who cooked and ate them.

Sad that this is fun to some.

Also sad that they then try to hide the evidence and pretend that their sport is to put meat on the table. Even sadder that licences are being issued to allow "removal" of natural predators to allow this wastage to take place.

It would be interesting to know if the birds had died and then been dumped because of bird flu.

If that was the case, they'd have to have been captive birds.

Well, it doesn't get more captive than being a bag.

Seriously though, the figures are remarkable. Even by the reckoning of the Game and "Wildlife" Conservation Trust, 35 million pheasant are released each year, with the reported total bag being only 15 million. It'd be interesting to know what happens to the rest.
Truly quite staggering numbers.

Just read this thread. A total waste. I enjoy sea fishing but only take enough for the pot. If fishing a match and fish are left after a weigh in, we take the fish to an old folks home, who are always grateful.
