Need someone to tell me a few good things about the ED82A... (1 Viewer)

I hope you are right, because they are superb scopes--super optics and super rugged--but they are now almost gone from the market in the USA, and the last ones are being sold at close-out prices ($999 for 82ED straight with 25-75 zoom and case from B+H).

Probably to push the EDG series to replace the dominant ED series and the Prostaff series for mid range budget for US market.

In my place ED82 is popular for beginner birdwatchers even though the warranty offered only for a year compared with the other more expensive brands. So most buyers opted for the ED82 and considered it as their once in a lifetime investment for spotting scope.

For binoculars, many are getting buying different brand now because of the QC from previous generation of Monarch series. The newest Monarch 5 and 7 is selling around RM 2.5k++. So it won't be able to compete with the new Zeiss Terra HD which is only selling around RM 1300++ directly from Amazon.

So I can see the dominant of Monarch in Malaysia soon will be replace by Zeiss!

the ED82 is an excellent scope,
i think its more value for money than any of the european scopes,
and certainly if you use any of the wide MC eyepieces,
the weak point are the zooms + glasses ( in my opinion )

nikon makes a variety of binos and scopes,
on different optical levels,
that might take away the exclusive air
that zeiss/swarro/leica have in europe,

in the US, Nikon seems to have a much
stronger brand?

Hi guys,

Im restarting this thread...

Been using the 82 now for a while. Overall I am happy with it. Crystal clear image!

Disadvantages: The 25-75x is somewhat useless for me since I'm using glasses. Like watching birds thorugh a straw. The DS 30x is great however! And I very rarely need more magnification thasn 30x.

One thing though, that I just do not understand. Why on Gods green earth isnt the eyepiece aligned with the center of the scope? Aiming is actually quite difficult! I have to aim the scope (to what seems as) very much to the left of the target. This make finding birds in flight a bit of a challenge.

Im smart enough to realize this wasnt done by Nikon as a practical joke. But I cant figure out the reasoning behind this solution. I guess I should have paid more attention in physics classes in school :)

Anyway. Great scope and value for the money. If aiming wasnt such a challenge Id be very very happy with it. But instead I'll have to settle with just happy...

Rec,

Here's the solution to your problem: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=99084

You can actually skip the article in the first post, since KorHaan's illustrations in the following few posts are extremely good and almost self-explanatory.

The prism is offset like that because it is the best way of making a prism that does not degrade the image quality. It is one of the chief reasons why you can enjoy that crystal clear image.

Hi,

With my eye at the eyepiece I just align the target with a point on the edge of the objective lens and then drop the scope down until the target is in view. With practice I can get on most targets first time.

Thanks Kimmo! Ill have a look at this for sure.

Ive just read tons of posts in different forums about Nikon potentially discontinuing the Fieldscope ED-series.

Omg. I hope I've done the right thing. Ordered an ED82A just 2 days ago, with the 30x wide DS. I already have the ED50 with the 25-75x (13-40x).

Also, I ordered the FSB-8 and a coolpix 310 for digiscoping. 310 wasnt easy to find anymore, but didnt know what else to buy that would work to digiscope with without modification.

Oh well. This new investment cost me a lot, and Im still not sure that I could afford it... Before I bought it I read reviews in this forum, and it seemed like a great scope to buy. Now - after I ordered the stuff - it seems like maybe I should have saved a little more money and instead go for a Zeiss or another European top brand scope.

Please - I need someone to tell me I've ordered some quality stuff that will make me a happy birder! So if you have an ED82A, and like it - please make a post about it :)

Hello,

Among many other things I love the compact nature of the ED82 given the size of the objective. The glass is superb. If you use an SLR check out the FSA-L1 adapter.

Do not overlook the 38XWA..the difference in magnification would show you more detail,in critical distance..I can read clearly license plates at 1 +km with 38x ,but 30x requires a tad of aiming and concentration, meaning effort..Of course brightness and FOV will be a bit diminished, but not in a drastic way...I have now been experimenting with some ,fairly inexpensive, astronomy eyepieces in the ED50 ,with excellent results..I imagine this results would be even better in the ED82,with its long focal lenght..One of the eyepieces I use id the same eyepiece that Vortex sells for the Razor as the 30X..A 16mm eyepiece sold as "Extra Flat",or "Flat Field"..Mounted on the ED82 will grant almost 33X,with a 60º AFOV and great edge performance..The price is about 60-70 pounds ,that compared with the price Vortex charge for it,or the Nikon eyepieces is inexpensive, even if you have to make an adapter(Vortex and ZEN ray do use an adapter as well for this eyepiece)...Is a great option in my opinion

Manuel,

If you get a chance then try the Celestron X-cel LX series in the Nikon. I have used the 25 mm with a variety of scopes and now use it with my Theron Optics version of the Nikon 82 A and am very impressed by its perforamnce. For the $65 they usually sell for they are a great performer.

whats this? Is it a real nikon (re-painted..) or a pirate copy?

Steve's thread is a good resource. I also did a comparison thread with the Mag82, ZR ED2 and the Celestron Regal.

I also commented on the Nikon ED50 / Mag82 combination here:

http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=217401&highlight=Theron+Mag82

It is a Bosma made scope that is based on the Nikon design.

My Nikon ED82 was a great scope giving many hours of pleasure. I only replaced it because of the lack of a decent wide-angle zoom.

Most of my friends who are Digiscopers preferred these Nikon ED82 + DS30x eyepiece. Good enough for their needs and no one has the MCII 25-75x zoom eyepiece. I did replaced my Nikon ED82 to EDG85 because of the wide zoom eyepiece and also it uses locking type bayonet and makes it easy for me to changed the eyepieces etc.

Overall for the value, ED82 is a fantastic scope!
