I was down at the pond earlier this morning. Saw a lot of birds, including two new lifers: a Grey Catbird at the bird below. Can anyone help me out?

Yep, a Solitary Sandpiper. Looks almost like a yellowlegs but it is shorter, doesn't have yellow legs (greenish instead), has a nice eye-ring, and darker wings.

Here you go

The long legs and realtively long straight bill are typical of Tringas and Actitis. Is the US you have 4 species to worry about. Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs are longer legged and have chrome yellowlegs, Spotted sandpiper is a dumpier bird and doesn't show that prminent eyering that your bird does.

The real challenge is telling to from the Eurasian Green Sandpiper. The most helpul feature is the white rump on Green and the dark rump on Solitary.. but that is hidden on this pic, so we will have to use something else. On Green Sand the wing tips are usually just about nlevel with the tail tips but on Solitary the wings project - as on your bird.

Green Sandpiper.... long-legged but tubby

Spotted Sandpiper...spotty in summer plumage, smaller and shorter legged than Solitary

There were three of them, so I don't think it's a Solitary Sandpiper... lol...

Anyway, I attached another, albeit blurry, picture, showing more of the back end.
