please would you help id these smaller falcons, cavorting with ravens? perhaps they appear small next to the ravens. there were two but only one may have been captured in these poor photos.

some 15 minutes later i saw this bird on its own. cannot fit it into the smaller species of falcons, sharp-cornered squarish tail is throwing me off. it does not look like a Hobby. the legs appear yellow, vent pale, but i can't see any markings on the body, it looks all a pale grey. barred through the hand. tail not especially long; no sign of black terminal band.

there are resident peregrines on the island, there's often a pair careering around, but seems to be wrong shape for a Falco pellegrino.

pix 1 - 5 i believe all of the same bird

thank you both, i guess peregrine id refers to the bird in my 2nd post of this thread. what about the bird with the raven in the 1st post?

Sorry, didn't look at the first one, thought they were the same, first is Eleonora: all brown upperside, small white cheeck patch and very long tail

too startled by Eleonora id., i'd like to pursue the Peregrine if i may

i've been thinking these 3 birds were Peregrines ...

moment of truth! ~ what are they?

whew! Peregrines - glad i wasn't completely off with the 3rd lot of photos on this thread. getting an idea of how different the tails can look.

re: Tom's exciting id of Eleonora's falcons in the first group of photos (all except for no.5 spotted by Simon as the odd one out, a Peregrine) ~ are photos 1 - 4 showing a young Eleonora? or an immature? from what can be seen, the feathers look very fresh.

The last (5th) photo in the 1st series is a Peregrine too I think.
hi Simon, i just happened to see again this thread of mine, and it looks like i may have misunderstood what you were saying, may i check ~ photo no.5 of 1st series shows a Peregrine with the Eleonora, is that what you were pointing out? or is it a Peregrine with a Raven?

thank you for your help.

Hi Kinthissa, I did mean Peregrine with a Raven - but now looking I'm assuming its the same Eleonora's as in the other photos - though it did strike me as a Peregrine at the time I can see now how it could be an Eleonora's after all ;)

Simon, thank you for looking again. Thanks to Lou as well. 1st series, last photo ~ Raven and Eleonora?

these birds were seen early October, when Eleonora's falcons (perhaps from Sardinia) would have been on the move. or they had nested in Sicily.
