advice needed (1 Viewer)

Hi everybody.

I have a pair of great tits that have nested in one of my boxes. I am concerned that instead of looking for natural food to feed their young they are taking food from the fat balls I have hanging in my garden to their chicks,
Will this do any harm to the young.Any advice would be much appreciated.

Fat should not cause them a problem. Whole peanuts are the killers for young nestlings. If you are worried see if you can get some Mealworms, these will do them a lot of good. Most of the birdfood dealers can sell these. A local Pet Shop or Angling Shop may also do the biz. Certainly the natural diet is caterpillars but when they are in short supply the adults resort to anything. Tim
