Definitely not, they will take higher. I haven't used a 2 gb in mine since shortly after purchasing.
 
For reference the fastest card for the 1D3 (according to Rob Galbraith) is the Sandisk Extreme 3 8gb - even faster than CF cards in this camera.
Up until recently a friend of mine had a 1D3 and his experience confirmed this. The 1D3 is, probably, the only camera that writes faster with SD cards rather than CF!
