New Sigma 150/600 (2 Viewers)

Here in Australia, one shop has the Sport model arriving November/December. No date yet on the Contemporary model.

No date and no indication of the weight either (which seems to be the biggest physical difference between the Sport and the Tammy).

If I was a cynic I might be tempted to say Sigma made the announcement of the Contemporary prematurely as a way of compromising the sales of the Tammy...

Some very nice shots there. Be interesting to see some side-by-side shots with the Tammy , both on the same body. Keeping in mind that with the extra size and cost it would have to do some things much better before I would have any interest. Even at the same money that extra weight bears thinking about.

The lenstip review states better quality overall. But 4 kg once there is a camera at the end of it means it is outside my weight-class

Niels

That 4 kg will similar to a 500, I think for me I might stick with the 400 5.6 + 1.4 TC as I like to walk and photo quite a lot. Also you would need to factor in the weight of the tripod to carry as well.

I already have the Tammy, which can readily be carried on a walk and used hand-held.

But I am interested in adding a better quality (ie heavier) lens for hide use etc. My thoughts are to try the new Sigma Sports 150-600, or else buy a second-hand Canon 600mm f4 IS Mk1.

A few photographs here https://www.flickr.com/photos/guccidpo/with/15698579551/ and they look quite good.

The difference wide-open is notorious (in favour of the sigma).
I also like the bokeh.

Only problem is the weight. I like to walk around and I don't like to take a tripod with me unless if I'm going to stay in a hide or to a cliff for sea birds.. I wonder if I can carry it for a few hours...

Received today, one of the first ones in Europe?

The 1.4x will arrive tomorrow.

Arrived too late in the day so had to use a flash for a couple quick comparisons with the Tamron.

Straight saves from the RAW files, no editing at all.

Lens build is very good. AF seems to lock more easily and stabilisation is very good.

Needed -4 micro-adjustment on the D810.

From the first shots contrast seems to be quite a bit better open wide than the Tamron even when using a flash.

More tests this weekend.

If the weight/price of the 600/4 IS MkI is no problem for you Nick I would take that in a heartbeat over any third party zoom lens - no comparison IMHO.

Ditto, and I would take third party out and just leave zoom lens.
I was a little hesitant to say that as I quite fancy a Canon 200-400/560 8-P but I take your point as I am a big prime fan although zooms are getting a bit better these days.

Finally some sunlight. A few shots with the Sigma (with and without the teleconverter).

They are looking good :t: a step up from the Tamron I would say, especially the bokeh which looks a lot nicer to me. It also looks as if the it takes the tc very well with some nice fine detail.

Yes, in my opinion the combination of sharpness, CA and contrast of the Sigma at 6.3 is very close to Tamron at f8 and also the bokeh is less busy.
