Imao Keinen - Japanese prints (1 Viewer)

Really a fascinating site and collection of work. I was really struck by the combination of plant and bird, until I read the introduction and realized that this is actually a style of print. It will take a long time to digest all of this!

Thanks for the link Nick

very interesting paintings...and I remember at my beginning with pencils

Japanese prints have been a huge influence on me, both directly and indirectly (through the work of Talbot-Kelly and Ennion). I think (in my Saturday evening gin-fuelled haze) that not only should I refrain from using so many brackets in my posts, I should also try to work more in these beautifully simple designs (also a painting of pochard that just looks like a frenetic mess that keeps telling me to bin it and start again lends weight to this view - damn - those bloody brackets again)!

Wonderful artwork!
Thanks for the Link Nick! Japanese bird art was a relevation for me during my teenage years, since I discovered this master

Though I tried to imitate the style first, I had to give up 'cause I realized soon that
I was missing the cultural background!
Despitethat it is still a feast for the eyes...

Fascinating to see his take on what I assume are wood ducks. Mighty close relatives if not exactly the same as the ones we have in US. But it's really interesting to see how he simplified their complex pattern.

Boy the more I look at these the more impressed I am. Probably my favorite of all the artists mentioned in this thread.

nice! shame I'm off to work now, would rather stay here and peruse all these - here's a link to the sketches part of the blog anyway:http://redshank2.exblog.jp/i3/

I'd like to see a field guide to Japan done by this artist, particularly using the sketches, as it'd be both useful and aesthetically pleasing.

Chris

p.s. John Boyds site has a section devoted to Japanese prints - along with the latest in avian taxonomy. Brilliant.

Artwork from the Far east has always intrigued me...

Nature is portrayed with such deft strokes and serenity....yet this 'calm' is, seemingly, at odds with uncaring attitudes towards the wildlife they portray and obviously revere so much....[all very strange and quite alien to westerners]...:smoke:
