saw these on our walk this morning at a farmyard, there were hundreds of them,

In all likelihood Scathophaga stercoraria as this is the most common and abundant species in this family (Scathophagidae). But there are several similar looking contenders and I don't know enough to be able to tell them apart (nor do I know if they can be separated from photographic details alone).
