Black terns in SE MI (1 Viewer)

Well-known member
Two black terns, one immature, rather rare in SE Michigan, seen skimming the surface of a pond in a brisk W wind. A myriad of cedar waxwings doing much the same; a belted kingfisher; a family of blue wing teal.

Those Black Terns are really getting around. We had our first arrive this year just over a week ago. Tonight there was a flock of about a hundred. They only stay here several weeks and then go on (to where I don't know).

Hi Dave,

I'm sure the two I saw were migrants from north of here: Black Terns very rarely if ever nest in my area nowdays. They were probably headed your way!

Best,
Bill
