Southern Sweden Owls (2 Viewers)

Ghostly Vision

Well-known member
Hi all

I found a Swedish bird news website recently, on which there were quite a few records of various Owls near Uppsala.

Having tried a google search, I now can't find that site.

As such, I wonder if anyone can link it on here, or perhaps provide information on any Owls in the Stockholm area (preferably further south if there are any, as flying to Skavsta is easier).

In particular I'm after Hawk owl, but of course a nice Great grey is always worth a look.

And of course, if there happen to be any Pine Grosbeaks that are regular and viewable, I'd go for one of those.

I'm thinking of doing a couple or three days over the holiday period, perhaps in the New Year.

Thanks in advance

Sean

EDIT: just found the site: http://www.artportalen.se/ but directions or locations would be very helpful, thanks.

Hi Sean,

Try to contact birdforum member buzzard12 (Alan Dalton). He recently posted this on the "Suffolk Hawk Owl" thread:
Hawk Owl, Great Grey Owl and Ural Owl all currently present at Uppsala, Sweden, showing daily currently...

I've been keeping my eye on sightings around Uppsala via the artportalen website, and there are now three Hawk Owls, all showing daily; two within a mile or two of Uppsala itself, one 20 minutes north of Vasteras Airport.

There is also a regular Great Grey Owl (see photo from yesterday here: http://www.artportalen.se/Media/Image/1494420 )

Today there were two flocks of Pine Grosbeaks, one of 8, the other of 17 - pic here: http://www.artportalen.se/Image/1494684 This spot is about 2 hours north of Uppsala.

Vasteras is accessible via Stansted with Ryanair. There are near daily flights and mine cost me £49 return. The Hotel in Uppsala costs about £40 a night including breakfast, and car hire is about £30-40 a day.

Looking forward to my weekend there on 15th-17th Jan!!

Aha, sorry! I've only just seen this. I could have given you some tips or advice. Glad you connected with the Hawk Owl at least!
