netgear universal wifi extender problem (1 Viewer)

sorry that I only pop up hereabouts when I have a problem..

trying to set up a netgear extender [wn2000] on an existing netgear router but the link rate LED is dead (i.e. not red, amber or green) even when placed right next to the router, never mind down the corridor

netgear router is fine- other stuff running off it in its immediate vicinity

the extender instructions seem to assume red, amber or green status as the first step in setting up

as ever any pointers appreciated- with the usual apologies if I am missing something very simple
