Bittell Reservoirs and Hopwood area (3 Viewers)

Lower.....same corner as yesterdays Blackcaps I had a Stock Dove inspecting the old rotting tree stump with all the holes in......after a nest ???

In the field with all the S***...sorry silage (stinky) while looking up the hedge for Yellowhammer I almost trod on a Skylark which took off in full song - pity I never herd a note though. It had 2 options - into the sun or not...it chose the wrong one...damn.

Keith,
I have sent you a PM
Cheers
Alan

Causeway Repairs

They are finally repairing the collapsed causeway at Lower Bittell so it will mean lack of access to the one side of road.
They have pulled the plug out over the weekend and the water level is going down ready for a retaining wall to be built.

Had a few Male Yellowhammer and a party of Reed Buntings on the hedge in teh cereal fields on the corner.

Swans have 6 young this year.

Upper Bittell...last night ....While waiting for a Common Tern to get off one of the sailing buoys and have a fly around another one shot over my shoulder from Lower ....with a fish......it flew straight at the one on the buoy and then I lost it.......anyone know if they are breeding here or was it just normal behavior.

First visit to Bittell for a while and was surprised to see the road blocked and fencing but it quickly became apparant as to its purpose. A chat with the security guard and he said another 14 weeks which seems a long time but hopefully the work will coincide with some return wader passage.

Quiet, as expected, plenty of Buzzards in the air as was one or two aircraft turning up for the Cosford Air Show including a Canberra, a fast jet in the clouds and a Yank Catalina flying boat.

A pair of Common Terns were fishing on Upper and flying down to Lower with the fish so i presume there is a nest somewhere? The Bee Orchids on the cut have now increased to 20+ flowering spikes and were nearly all out. They are adjacent to the new fishing pool which was crammed full of fishermen and people think birding is a nerdy hobby!

Always a pleasant walk didn't bump into anybody else.

LAURIE....it looks like they are putting a new car park in as well as repairing the road - and with the hedge not getting its seasonal cutting its a bit hard to see a anything.
I had a Common Tern bringing a fish UP to Upper so not sure what they are up to.
Theres always loads of Starling,Swallow,House Sparrow,Goldfinch and the odd Greenfinch at the top of the road where the footpath crosses.
Will have to check out the Orchids...dont get onto the canal too often.

Probably not a new car park as it looks like they are putting piles in as a new causeway.........bet the rawlplugs are HUGE.......

leucistic House Martin

Upper Bittell.I had a leucistic House Martin yesterday in with a large flock of hirundines and it was still there today. It is a striking looking bird,so white.

Given the paucity of migrants it might be worth a look if you don't get a better offer.:t:

Decent day at Upper Bittell despite continuous rainfall. Chris Thompson along with Phil Parsons found a Sanderling & I believe a Greenshank which did not stay. They also found a juv Arctic Tern to accompany the 3 Common Terns ( 2 juv & adult.
It was whilst watching these that a 1st summer Little Gull appeared for about 15 mins before flying off over the dam end. Only myself & Terry Hinett, who had been watching 50yds away were fortunate to see the Little Gull. The Arctic Tern however stayed till late PM.

Hughie King

2 Common Sandpiper on causeway shore at 5pm- flew off to SE shore.
Still lots of Swallow in lane and over water.

Lots of Swallows over Lower and Mill shrub yesterday with the occasional Martin.

The sun bought out many Holly Blues and also spotted a Small Copper on the new bank.
Highlight was a Grass Snake slithering across Mill Shrub.
Theres always at least one Grey Wagtail showing up ...with the Kingfisher keeping mostly hidden in the trees.
The usual mixed flock of Tits keep showing up with the odd Warbler in amongst it.
