This bird whizzed past me while at the fish ponds ...flew over lower pond towards Lower Bittell.
Thinking Snipe.
Put it on I.D. section.....

Had a nice Autumn day on the canal with family today and took a few photos as light was so good. Well over 40 species recorded including finding a Barnacle Goose and female Wood Duck (thanks for tip off Jarrad).

Nice patch…………...

Nice Barnacle.....The Wood Duck has been around for a couple of years. :t:

Wondered how long it would be before "they" realised it was pointless trying to keep poachers out with the little wooden fence..........this week they reinforced it with an eyesore of a solution.......back to how its been for the last 3-4 years.

Nothing out of te ordinary at Lower but many hours spent watching the usuals.......

The afternoons have been dark, dead and dreary all week with nothing going on.....a highlight today though was 2 KESTRELS following each other over the corner of Lower and around the trees on the bridleway. One returned minutes later and went off down the right of Lower.
The Male Kingfisher shot under the road and off to the far end of Mill Shrub but was later catching supper ...a quiet big fish which it couldn't kill - so flew to the large branch under the trees on the right edge of water.

Had a fairly productive walk around both reservoirs today, which produced:

Mute Swan, Canada Goose, Greylag Goose, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Grey Heron, Cormorant, Great Crested Grebe, Coot, Moorhen, Kingfisher, Lapwing, Black-Headed Gull, Herring Gull, Buzzard, Jackdaw, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Jay, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Redwing, Nuthatch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, Dunnock, Robin, House Sparrow, Goldfinch, Pied Wagtail, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Woodpigeon, Collared Dove and Starling.

Chris

I was feeling lucky after spotting a couple Buzzards on the M42 this afternoon so I had a quick stop at the Lower Res. I disturbed a Grey Wagtail and then a Kingfisher which flew across the res and gave a call as it went up the river. Great! Some of my other favourites were present; 3 cormorant, a few tufted ducks and a GCG. Not bad for a ten minute stop!!

A few images of the great northern diver from this afternoon. It likes to fish near the dam so alongside the public footpath.
