iPod & Belkin card reader (1 Viewer)

Alastair Rae

London birder
Been investigating if an iPod could be used as repository for pix on long trips.

I found this damning review of the Belkin card reader: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1023&message=6403600

The bottom line is that it is very slow (22 mins to transfer a 500 Mb CF card) and requires its own batteries.

Don't think I'll be getting one.

So what do I do? Stock up with lots of the cheapest CF cards with slow save speeds and possible reliability problems?

Hi Alastair,

Must admit that I have gone down the track of several cards. I use 128mb SM and 256mb CF's. I have only once ever had a problem with a card and that was a 64 mb SM card that was heavily used.

It was annoying to lose a set of photos, but much more gratifying to know that I didn't have all my eggs in one basket - which applies whatever the storage medium you use.

With the low prices on medium now, I still think that is the way to go.

I have just bought an Epson P-2000 which I will be taking on a three week trip to Cambodia starting tomorrow. I hope it lives up to the hype - certainly it has had rave reviews like this one:

I was also tempted by the Scandisc FlashTrax which has won numerous awards:

These portable storage devices are fantastic as well as being very versatile - great way of sharing your images via a little slide show.

storing pix

The new video ipod enables you to download pix straight from your camera in the field and with 30 or 60 gig models should enable you to store a lot of photos, havent used it as such but should be good
