thanks for the comments :)

I was thinking of doing a little owl as my next 3D project, possibly carving the bird from the same piece of wood as the log (so the bird doesn't need to be attached to the mount- it forms into it at the feet of the bird). I'll look into getting some glass eyes.

very good plan- just keep going! these folks from Snowdonia are good for the wondrous eyes: http://www.glasseyes.com/

getting the size right is a bit of an art in itself- you need a bigger diameter than you might think, as most of a bird's eye is deepset, hidden by socket and lid- there's some very good US sites with dimensions for selected species which translate quite well into old world equivalents

I hope to use much more watercolour this year than I did last year as I enjoy working with it and I find it can give some interesting effects which cannot be achieved with gouache. I'll also try and do more field sketches- this years new year resolutions, lets see if I manage to keep to them!!

I hope to start my little owl soon, managed to get another apple log so will star when I can and I'll post WIP pics, hopefully all will go to plan!

thanks again everyone for the nice comments and advice :D
