Anyone else like Birds AND planes? (4 Viewers)

Previous to my earlier posts, I now have to be extremely cautious what I photograph and where. On my usual trail walk I went a bit further than normal, some 5km. There are numerous buried gas pipes and a few very small (20m2) gas hubs which are enclosed in barbed wire and a bigger distribution centre belonging to Gazprom.

2 weeks ago today, I was arrested on a public footpath by armed Gazprom security and detained. My broken Russian and their slightly, but not much better English, helped me understand that I was suspected of 'photographing an installation of the Russian Republic'. My camera, thankfully just a pocket digi and not our D5 with 600m lens was taken away for examination.

I had no papers with me, I hardly see anyone on this trail so didn't expect to need them and my fiance was in Moscow but via my mobile I was able to alert her to my adventure. I asked why I was being held and how long for, the stony faced reply did not comfort me 'we wait for the big boss to see if we will prepare papers' in other words if I would be charged with anything.

Time passed and I was at this point expecting to be released once they'd seen what was on my camera but I was in for shock. After 2 hours, an armed militia in Ninja like black uniforms, complete with machine guns arrived, handcuffed me and took me away in a police car.

Eventually, Anastasia's father was contacted and arrived at the police station with my papers and they seemed satisfied that this sweaty, shirtless guy, covered in insect spray and with a camera full of butterfly pictures was in fact not James Bond. Thank god I didn't have the big camera with all the aircraft pics is all I can say!

The Gazprom facility in which I was detained is much bigger than I realised but isn't visible from where I walk. Once inside, the size was more obvious. A large display cabinet showed off football trophies alongside WW2 memorobilia presumably unearthed during the laying of gas pipes. Helmets, bullets, grenades etc but on the wall opposite, was a poster making it clear why I'd been detained, terrorism.

This is a very paranoid country right now and I'll have to tread carefully in future, even on an obscure trail I now think of as home.

Andy

Mate, you're in a banana republic. Do you understand that now? Law in Russia means what the guy with the biggest gun says it means. Truth is what the guy with the biggest gun says. Paranoia is not new in Russia. Maybe you should try a little of it yourself.... Tread carefully.

Good birding: I enjoy your wildlife pix!

Just finished the annual fix of both modern military and warbirds at RIAT and Flying Legends respectively.... I have 11,000 photos to edit! Not only that but Farnborough is this week.

I might put a couple of the best up here in a month or so.

When on my way to the OSME AGM at the BTO on 2 July, when passing the Watton turn-off to the Stamford Training Area, a replica Fokker Triplane flew west from the Watton direction. Unfortunately, I was in a long queue of traffic headed by a couple of living dead whose average speed varied between 39 and 24m/h, and so I couldn't stop and try for a picture.:-C

Almost ignored this when I heard it when I was out birding on Wednesday past. Suddenly realised it was in the wrong place at the wrong height for a plane of its size and gave it a bit of attention taking a series of photos. Antonov An-30 'Clank' of the Russian Air Force on an Open Skies mission headed, I think, for RM Condor at Arbroath. Camera bay is open.

Oddly enough, this isn't the first time I've seen one of these while out birding in Scotland. Had one a few years ago headed for the then RAF Leuchars base, seen skirting through low cloud from Riverside Nature Park in Dundee.

Excellent catch, and well taken!

Some from my favourite day out of every year: Duxford's Flying Legends. It was with some relief that I found that post-Shoreham rule changes had not emasculated the premier warbird show in Europe.

John

USAF Heritage Flight: F22 Raptor and P51D Mustang (Controversial: jets at Legends arouses fierce condemnation from some enthusiasts - its worse than calling a favourite rarity an escape on here.... ;))
Boeing B17G Flying Fortress
Hawker Fury
Hispano Ha 1112 Buchon (Me 109 built in Spain, with RR Merlin engine)
Fighter Command 1940: Blenheim, Spitfire, Hurricane, Gladiator.

And a few more:

Spitfire I: probably the most beautiful aviation silhouette in the world....
Grumman Avenger
Spitfire I from the side this time, still hard to beat
Spitfire Vb note clipped wings for higher roll rate (= more manoeuvrability - I prefer the round wing of course)
The Balbo - Flying Legends' speciality: a mass take off of piston fighters followed by a formation parade of the lot. Has to be seen and heard to be believed. Grown men surreptitiously eye-wiping.

Love your shots!
Good on you, getting an F-22, never seen one, they are scarce in the NYC area. Did get a NYC tour aboard a B-24 though. o:D

Couple going over to/from the sunderland air show last week - anyone know what they are? Low pitched droning engines.

Same aircraft surely, don't know what though, a private job?

You can probably find out everything about it from the index?

Looks like it's had a paint job.

Andy

Think the blurry one is G-ZXLL. Forgot to say (yep, I know, I should have!!) it was a group of four together, flying in formation; they went over several times. Didn't have time to get pics of each one.

A quick Google of the registration visible in the photo shows it is an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300

Thanks!

Thanks!

G-ZXLL is one of the aircraft used by an aerobatic team called "The Blades" whose aircrew component is composed entirely of ex-Red Arrows pilots. They are pretty good considering the limitations of the aircraft (compared to the BAe Hawk T1A). Best seen at small venues though, they certainly struggle to fill the Farnborough sky.

Had this rather nice visitor pass through Eyebrook res in Leics/Rutland this afternoon, good to see it flying again.

James.

Interesting coincidence, I just saw the other one (VR-A) on Sunday over Toronto harbour. It was flying a few circuits - not sure why, as the local Toronto Air Show (the C.N.E. one) was last weekend. This was the first time I'd seen it in, I think, just over a year.

I was at Duxford Air Show on Sunday, awesome weather and a great show including my first sight of the Lanc since the two Lancaster tour in 2014 and a mass Spitfire segment with a 14 aircraft scramble, then in formation, then a multi-track tailchase that was almost unphotographable but an incredible spectacle. The Red Arrows closed the show with the best display I've seen from them in years.

On top of that I had a Honey Buzzard over and several Yellow Wagtails. A great day out - pix of the aeroplanes as soon as I've gone through them - the total for the day was over 5000 and so far I'm only down to 1700!

John

Duxford pix then (apologies for three batches but not a very sincere one :king:)

Batch 2:

Avro Lancaster BI

Goodyear FG1 Corsair (for those who thought it was a Chance-Vought F4U Corsair, you are right, but the WWII US Navy nomenclature for aircraft built by different contractors is amazing!)

Hawker Hurricane IIb

de Havilland Vampire FB52 (export variant equivalent to the RAF's FB5)

Consolidated PBY5A Catalina
