Took a trip to Moore and actually managed to catch up with a bird that has eluded me all my life... Lesser Spotted Woodpecker! Found it myself in Birch wood whilst looking for Willow Tits! Not that I found the Willow Tits, but the LSW was much welcomed!

Managed to get a couple of snaps of the LSW and the Ring Ouzel and the Spoonbill at Parkgate: please take a look: http://birdingnorthwales.blogspot.co.uk/

Great photos Alex, much better than mine. Willow Tits seem to have been quite scarce at Moore this winter.

Thanks for comments..

On the whole, Willow tits have been declining left, right and centre and Moore use to have a little strong hold of these birds. They seem very hard to track down now which is a shame.

Great finds, Alex, and superb photos.

We had Lesser Spotted in our local Nature Reserve (Putnoe) and then, sadly Oak disease struck, and many of the mature trees where removed.
Now there are a lack of these little (mini GSW me's) around over the past 2 years or so.

I will make a 'positive' point of getting up at the crack of dawn, and see if there has been a return of these little cute pies in our area as soon as I can.

It will add to their numbers in real life after all.

Both species on the Rare Breeding Bird Panel list now!

Hi Andy

Yes, they are very rare indeed.

The thing is we had these Lessers at Putnoe LNR for a good couple of years, and I took note of their behaviour - meaning they are very vocal for such a small bird (the size of a Chaffinch)

I will add my quota, and see if they have decided to come back to Putnoe LNR in the next few weeks...as it will make all the difference if they have decided to reappear once more. :t:

Regards
Kathy

I`ve been out to the New forest a few times in the last couple of weeks,to a couple of locations where I know they breed.Despite hearing them i`ve still had no sightings.

Steve.

Spent a long and leisurely afternoon wandering a well known lesser spot spot in the New forest yesterday. Was quite surprised not to have even heard any. This time last year there were several drumming and calling and I managed to locate one and get good views of it.
I did see plenty of redstarts and a pair of hawfinches yesterday though :)

Another enigmatic bird which is on that list.

Many thanks for the link, I've downloaded that and the woodcock podcast to listen to at work :)

Totally agree... great information on both the LSW and Woodcock. Regarding the Woodcock podcast, if anyone is interested about ringing and tracking woodcock, check out these sites:

I've done a little bit myself with a mate that 'lamps' them:

Great site here, following the migration routes of 12 different woodcock around the country

Thanks very much for those links, have added them to my favourites. The strange whistle and croak of the roding woodcock is one of my favourite bird sounds.

The lesser spot podcast was very informative I thought, gave me a few ideas regarding the best places in a wood to look out for them. I didn't realise their territory was that large either.
