There were 42 (or 41) YLG present at Dartford on the 27th Aug.

Have some fun with these shots!

Regards to all,

Andy.

Hi Andy,
the two Gulls in front appeared to be Herring Gulls. The bird at the back was obviously large, a male?, it didn`t seem to have the typical YLG head shape and bill profile, more Cach-like at times. Not much to go on I know but what do you think of the visible covert markings?

cheers, Pete.

Thanks Pete.

It's a big bird then! I can see why you are thinking Caspian as the tips to the median and greater coverts form two clear wingbars. Parallel sided bill and pear shaped head. Is the eye high on the head though?

Cheers,

Andy.

Could be Andy, its a bit of a head-scratcher! Could be one for our European colleagues?Nice pic of the YLGs , be interesting to know where that red darvic ringed bird originates from,

Pete.

Hi Cristian,

Is bird 4 in post 2009 a Caspian perhaps?

Nice shots, by the way!

Cheers,

Andy.

Edit: although it doesn't show the hanging hind belly or pale tips to the median and greater coverts...

What do you make of this bird please? I think it is a YLG (rather than a Caspian).

Cheers,

Andy.

Hi folks, just a postscript to bird #2002.I saw it again yesterday and whilst unable to get any pics as it was mainly in flight, I had great views of its underwing, which was very pale and the tail, whilst not clean cut black and white, certainly fell within that expected for Cach.Any further views from our continental friends?

Hi Andy, a nice 1stw Mich there! like that bill profile, really distinctive.

if that head & bill profile's distinctive it's back to the drawing board for me!
I only consider the real classic Caspians to have a distinctive profile though I guess I look at far fewer gulls than you guys.

Hi James,

Some juv YLG/Casps can look alike. However, generally, if I am uncertain, then in all likelihood it is a Yellow-legged Gull as is the case with this bird.

The bill is deceptively narrower at the base which, in my view, is better for Caspian. It was also very long legged especially so above the knee. But it is a deep bellied bird with a broad square head so it can only really be a Yellow-legged Gull.

There were 6+ 1st winter Yellow-legged Gulls present so I'll put some more pics here of one or two of them. Note that the subject bird has already moulted all/most of its scapular & mantle feathers whereas of all the juvenile LBBGs and Herrings present still had all/most of their solidly dark centred 1st generation mantle/scapulars. I'll post some pics when time allows.

There was also a brief juv Caspian which I managed to film for 5-10 seconds (I'll upload that too).

Cheers,

Andy.
