Hi,

I'm new to all of this and looking for a guide to assist identification of raptors - one that will give adivice on id of birds in flight. I only get to watch in N. Europe so any guide will need to cover this area if nothing else.

CHeers in advance for any help!

Hi and welcome to BirdForum.

If you are a newcomer to raptors, then perhaps the best place to start is with a general European field guide, in which case the Collins Bird Guide by Lars Svensson, Peter Grant and Killian Mullarney is the best going, and it certainly covers the raptors pretty well. If you are wanting something more specialised, then Dick Forsman's Raptors of Europe and the Middle East represents the state of the art right now.

Cheers,

Stuart

Hi,

A warm welcome to BirdForum from all the Moderators and Admin.

I would echo Stuart's comments. I have both volumes and they are excellent.

I believe a new "concise" version of "Raptors of the World" is due for release in November. The original is hardly portable!

I also used "Flight Identification of European Raptors" for years. The photos are poor, but the drawings are excellent. This and Dick Forsman's book would be my ideal selection.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I took a peak at the Collins Guide which is excellent. Have plumped for that one and will look out for the 'concise' version of the Forsman book when it comes out - it might be something that Santa could bring!

Cheers!

Sorry, the "Concise" that is promised in Nov is Fergusson Lees's "Raptors of the World". A fabulous book but does what it says on the tin, and hence weighs a ton.

Forsman's Book covers Europe only.

Sorry if my previous post wasn't too clear

No worries - I'll still take a peak when it comes out, but as I don't get out of Europe too often.....................................
