For me its been the Reef Heron but I finally got on to one at the Waipu reserve down Johnson rd. The tide was well out and the birds were well spread but the Reef Heron was easy to spot on the edge of very large numbers of White-Faced Herons. After a few minutes it slowly flapped away and I never would of picked it up!
It was also a notable day for me, as early in the day over on the West side of Northland, I got very good close views of Australasian Bittern. Not a common bird but one I've seen quite often of late. No doubt feeding on the plentiful crop of Frogs we have here at the moment.
