The beak looks like something a "raptor" might have, but the "jizz" just isn't quite right. I am really going to go "off the wall" and say hatchling WOOD DUCK.

Well, one of you are correct. I will hold off for just a bit. It's nice to know there's a use for my over/under exposed shots. :)

This is a Juvenile White Tailed Hawk if I know where the head is? By the way, the hole in the tree was made by a Pileated Woodpecker.

What beak? I can't see one Larry. Is the head not back over the shoulder?

I have no idea but as one of the first three is apparently correct and LBJ doesn't count ;) by a process of deduction I will say....Juv. RH Woodpecker.

Michael and Steve, I believe you may be correct. I was probably mistaken about which direction this bird was facing. It could be the tips of the primaries that I made out to be a "beak". Viewing the photo with a "new mind set" I think it is probably a Red-headed Woodpecker. Oh well, I have "turned plastic bags into Snowy Owls before" so this isn't quite as bad.

I was going to wait 24 hours to post the answer, but, it is indeed a FY (first year) Red-Headed Woodpecker. Good going Michael.
