Avian learning - blue tits and milk bottles (1 Viewer)

As anybody over 40 will remember, most household milk in the UK used to be delivered early in the morning, which meant it was left on the doorstep for an hour or so.

I remember seeing a couple of small maps which showed regions in England where bluetits had learned to peck through the aluminium foil tops on the bottles.

As I recall, it started as a small blob near London, and after ten years it was a big blob covering nearly the entire country.

At that time, milk was not homogenised, which meant the cream floated to the top. The blue tits had also learned which colours of foil (was it gold top??) had the cream with the highest fat content.

Clever ...

I would really like to see those maps, and preferably the entire page. Can anybody help me track it down? Or maybe post it online?

Thanks!
