Thanks Phil,,,yes it came within a few yards as it made its way along the dam....with some barmy b***** running along to try and get level with it while it was under water....not easy with all the gear on a tripod.

Keith:t:

A few more pics...
1...where I 1st saw it.....it looked even smaller than this.
2...It decided to hire a boat...
3...Looking to board another one...
4..Diving.
5 One for the Gull people...quite close for Bittell.

apart from the diving one they are un-cropped.

Had Sunday morning out and about around the local sites and got to Lower around midday.....only a Tufted on Mill Shrub and what looked like nowt on Lower...but after a scan there was 3/4 Cormorant....about a dozen Wigeon with a few Pochard.
All staying on the far shore.
Windy and overcast...
Keith

p.s. had a look in the fields around the River Arrow.....not as flooded as I thought it would be...but it had swept my "hide" away....found it snagged downstream and had to wade in to rescue it.

Fight

Friday.....forgot about this....stuck my head over the hedge at Mill Shrub by the gate looking for the Kingfisher and suddenly a Heron...Buzzard and BHGull were chasing each other...well the Buzzard was after the huge fish the Heron had and the Gull was after what it could get.
In the end the Heron dropped it and they all lost out....the Buzzard carried on after the Heron though...wonder if it was the Buzzards fish to start with.
Al of a sudden the Heron was arcing towards me....so I waited with the lens on the gap in the trees and got him with just one lucky click.

25 mins later the Heron was on the grass and another can off Lower and dived on him....now I liked the one on the grass and I liked the one in the air but can't decide which I liked best so....FIGHT
Keith :t:
This is how it went just like a Crane type dance ...only more dangerous.

Monday 2nd Dec... Lower Bittell.

Looks like its going to be a terrible week for weather/light so any pics will be even worse than usual.

A nice little flock of Redwing on the berries etc around the north edge of Shrub Mill.....it was so dark I could only see them when they moved.
After about 1/2 an hour of watching a Kingfisher plopped into the waters edge from the 1st tree from the gate and then onto the bench to eat the fish.....it ended up in the little bush further along.Dived again and then out of sight at the back of the bush.....had to get off to work then.

Tuesday 3rd Dec....Mill Shrub and the Fish Ponds....

Anglers on Lower again so nothing there but a Pair of Goosander on Mill Shrub....they saw me and swan a bit before flying off.
No redwings in the trees today here either.

Up at Upper the pair of Goosander were on the east shore with some BHgulls ...no Redwing around the Pump house.

Lots of Mallard on the end pool with the white female staying under the trees...could not see the Little Grebe but it was sighted earlier.
The Redwing were all over the holly trees at the Tower house but so flighty.

Reports of a Shrike around Hopwood/Bittell 20th Dec......Don't know if it has moved on though.

Keith :t:

Got a phone call from the finder, Gary Prescott, yesterday at 12:33. He was driving along the road when he first spotted it. He got out of his car and watched it in a field which was planted up with trees. He said it was quite distant at that point and he only had his bins with him. Then he said John Belsey (Upstarts1979) had just arrived - I presume John managed to see it ok (?).

A very nice bird to stumble upon that's for sure - it probably made Gary's day. :t:

1..The nearest I had it was at 11am - .Cropped
2..As shot
3..11.51 and after going over the ridge it showed on the horizon -.Cropped
4..As shot
5 ..A pair of Swans flew in over the field by the layby and then onto the pool on the River Arrow.

Great Grey Shrike
Superb bird to have locally. distant views today better views yesterday even blood on its beak after caching a vole. Looks like a first winter with white tipped greater coverts making wing bar . Fantastic bird last saw one at Bittell 1974. Lets hope it stays

Must have been great to see it nab the Vole....where was it in 1974 as these fields were more of a pasture then....
Cheers

Great Grey Shrike

Update.....lovely golden light first thing but it stayed miles away by the large Oak trees.
weather closed in and it decided to hide away in the bushes but as the late morning brightened up it came a touch closer for a while.

Lots more people turned up and managed a view before leaving.

Took the opportunity to enter the field and view my makeshift hide on the stream while the Shrike was hiding again.
It had been washed out again as the stream was now a torrent after yesterdays and the weeks storms.
Sneaked over by the Oaks to see if the Shrike was in the back fields and all of a sudden a bird flew left from around the canal entrance where 2 spotters were coming across the field.
It landed quite close in a tree top for about 10 secs and then over me to the front fields again.

Had a phone call just as all this was going on informing me of a close family bereavement so returned to the car.Waited a bit longer as it was coming closer to the road but it was only a brief visit.
