hi folks,
some movement here i see. i'm just back from lanzarote where i took pics of these 'intergrades' between nominate mich and atlantis (i have heard the name "atlantic gull" for that ssp.)
regarding andy's comment about the bill base in his last nice 1cy YLG - a male by the looks of it: yes, mich tends to have a high base and usually less curvature in the middle section of bill, but on the other hand a bulbing tip (produced by a strongly hanging gonys) is rather typical for mich versus cach - although we have enough pontics with a strong curvature on lower mandible and a hanging gonys...this bird has a striking mich bill, although poss. a female: http://lou.bertalan.de/gulls/pic/vh/up_0898.jpg
edit - i correct: only the bill tip in the latter example looks strinkingly mich-like with its strong curvature but the rather slim and parallel basal part isn't so good as example (better this snubnose female: http://lou.bertalan.de/gulls/pic/vh/up_0825.jpg)
now pete's bird in #2002: i guess will remain uncertain since some things point towards caspian but are not enough to clinch it. the bill looks good for a male casp. and the simple GC pattern also but beware of similarly patterned juv michs (andy told about such ind. i guess: http://lou.bertalan.de/gulls/pic/vh/up_0138.jpg or this cachoid one: http://lou.bertalan.de/gulls/pic/vh/up_0132.jpg). if the underwing was pale and the tail band was less than black and white you can add two more pluspoints for caspian. still, i'd have like to see a flying or sideview pic to exclude the more probable YLH.
cristian,
some nice new 1cy pics of the 'eastern type' of YLG there which i'd like to have in larger pics (would you mind?)
a taste from the southwestern edge of breeding range here a couple of young lanzarotean "atlantoids":
