gulls (2 Viewers)

hi folks,

some movement here i see. i'm just back from lanzarote where i took pics of these 'intergrades' between nominate mich and atlantis (i have heard the name "atlantic gull" for that ssp.)

regarding andy's comment about the bill base in his last nice 1cy YLG - a male by the looks of it: yes, mich tends to have a high base and usually less curvature in the middle section of bill, but on the other hand a bulbing tip (produced by a strongly hanging gonys) is rather typical for mich versus cach - although we have enough pontics with a strong curvature on lower mandible and a hanging gonys...this bird has a striking mich bill, although poss. a female: http://lou.bertalan.de/gulls/pic/vh/up_0898.jpg
edit - i correct: only the bill tip in the latter example looks strinkingly mich-like with its strong curvature but the rather slim and parallel basal part isn't so good as example (better this snubnose female: http://lou.bertalan.de/gulls/pic/vh/up_0825.jpg)

now pete's bird in #2002: i guess will remain uncertain since some things point towards caspian but are not enough to clinch it. the bill looks good for a male casp. and the simple GC pattern also but beware of similarly patterned juv michs (andy told about such ind. i guess: http://lou.bertalan.de/gulls/pic/vh/up_0138.jpg or this cachoid one: http://lou.bertalan.de/gulls/pic/vh/up_0132.jpg). if the underwing was pale and the tail band was less than black and white you can add two more pluspoints for caspian. still, i'd have like to see a flying or sideview pic to exclude the more probable YLH.

cristian,

some nice new 1cy pics of the 'eastern type' of YLG there which i'd like to have in larger pics (would you mind?)
a taste from the southwestern edge of breeding range here a couple of young lanzarotean "atlantoids":

Indeed it is Jane.I can`t really decide what it is.The very pale virtually unmarked undertail and vent is pro-YLG as is the advanced upperpart moult of course.the head shape isn`t very good for YLG but the bill is alright I guess. The tertials aren`t massively YLG but as you say those primaries are lengthy.Hopefully more input will help.

It doesn't give off Herring Gull vibes in my entirely non-analytical approach to Gulls. Easiest for me to reach for the hybrid option, but YLG was my starting point.

pete's 1cy looks odd, head and bill plus long wings look wrong for HG while covert pattern looks wrong for caspian....

i have started uploading my lanzarote pics here: http://lou.bertalan.de/gulls/m_grp.php?g=michahellis 'atlantoides' from lanzarote for the start with the adults i took (most photos are of 1cy).

edit: 3cy (one) and 2cy uploaded now. unfortunately the 2/3cy gallery shows no pic although they're there, i'll try to fix it today. some are visible in the newest uploads.

newest: http://lou.bertalan.de/gulls/m_newest.php
adults done: http://lou.bertalan.de/gulls/m_newest.php

On September 17/18th I took some pics with Little Gulls and Mediterranean Gulls on the banks of Techirghiol Lake, Romania. Soon I'll upload some of them here.

Some pics taken on September 17th and 18th 2011. The first three are taken on the bank of Techirghiol Lake. The other two are taken on the beach, in Eforie Sud.

The question is LBBG or Herring Gull. In the field I thought the latter but now am leaning toward the former. Either way it is an unusual though not unrecorded dark plumage.

Photographed 19 September, Edinburgh. Sorry about the quality - combined effect of distance, lens, light quality and me!

Geoff

Edit: pretty sure that this is a LBBG now. Here is a similar bird http://www.iesmeulmeester.nl/fotos.php?actie=foto&subcatsub=502

hi geoff,

both herring gulls and LBBG ahve such dark "morphs" but as you said this one is undoubtedly a graellsii type bird with its long wings, weak bill, plain GC and TT.

I'm thinking that these are the first argies of the season, though no doubt someone will tell me I've fluffed an atlantis. Seen by accident while looking for waders...honest

Argentatus indeed Jane. At least 12 at Seaforth today which is a good number for early October.Although none of them had dark marks on the face as your bird did, there were several Argenteus and LBBs which had soot stains on the head/underparts.I guess these must be roosting on power stations or similar. These "sooty" gulls are not uncommon in the winter roosts at Seaforth or Richmond Bank.
Good to see you were accidentally gulling today!

Photo taken today at Porto Lagos,North-East Greece.
Is this a cachinans or a michahellis?
