Opticron MM3 + Iphone 5S (1 Viewer)

As I continue to refine my skills I think some of the pics are getting better. Part of it is the new adjustability options via IOS 8 and the IPhone 5S. I can now adjust exposure prior to the shot.

HD video of the Cormorant can be found at:

Be sure to adjust the resolution to "HD" in the bottom right hand corner before viewing.

That's looking good. Interesting: the video has better contrast than the
still picture. Not sure how that happens. It might even be my eye
integrating the light.

Between this and my own looking (with a 70mm/f-10 Astro!) I've come to
realize that distances and powers can be fairly low once the critters get
used to you, and thus the atmosphere is usually no trouble.
I've had to back off to 30x to fit the heron in, and that's at 250 ft.
Need to get on with an adaptor.

One of my favorite pics so far at.... Great Egret, Local lake yesterday....

Thank you. :)

What I have found is that photography is a great deal more than just having suitable equipment. It took me a while to figure out lighting is essential...and then just timing and luck....at least so far. ;)

That particular picture worked out because of all of the above. Some of the others I took that morning weren't as good but were still acceptable in my opinion. Case in point, the pic below....

Very severe contrast...yikes. That really happens, though.
You will find the lighting overcomes the camera's range often.
That didn't happen so much with film.
Ideal lighting for the digicam is sort of a 'bright overcast sky',
like those light tents and flash umbrellas
they sell for making ebay photos and museum shots..

Cameras like the FujiFlim 'EXR's are especially good at dynamic range.
All the pricey DSLRs, as well.....that's the main thing they do.
Size and price go way up, of course. So, you can up the equipment...not cheaply.

Some kind of long-distance tele-flash can 'fill' photos like that sometimes.

Here is a pic from this past weekend at a local lake....same setup as before. Belted Kingfisher on an interesting stump. ;)

Have been doing a ton of phonescoping lately with the above Opticron/IPhone combo. A local quarry has tens of thousands of Snow Geese. One of my favorite recent pics is below.

A link to one of my recent phonescoped Youtube videos is here:
