Saw this little guy this morning (28 Nov) before sunrise and it was backlit, so dim and horrible light yielding an awful photo, but I can't recall ever seeing a bird like this or heard its call before. Poor thing couldn't get airborne. As bad as the photo is, I'm hoping there's still enough detail for an ID.

Unfortunately have to agree with above. Likely a female wood duck, haven't seen one of those around here for a month or two.
 
Thanks to both of you. Yes, I don't think it looked good for it. It tried to fly away several times, but couldn't lift out of the water. Sad.
