The reverse of the current Malaysian 5 ringgit note has a fine drawing of two rhinoceros hornbills (image attached). The bird on the right has a much more prominently curved casque. Both birds appear to have black markings on bill and casque. Available literature (e.g. HBW Alive) suggests to me that both are males (black markings), and that the one on the left is ssp rhinoceros from peninsular Malaysia, and the one on the right is ssp borneoensis from Borneo.
Can anyone confirm or deny this? If so, is it deliberate, covering both east and west Malaysia, or just happenstance?
I'd be grateful for any thoughts!
