Problem with my Opticron Spotting Scope (1 Viewer)

Philipc

New member
My venerable old spotting scope has developed a flaw on one of the lenses in the eyepiece. it is - in effect - a small blemish on the left of the area visible when the scope is in use.

my son has done a good job in photographing this flaw - see attached image

Any thoughts? obviously i can just buy another eyepiece, but i just thought i would post here and see if there was an obvious 'fix'. i don't like throwing things away!

cheers

Hi Philip,

first of all, welcome to birdforum!

Regarding your eyepiece (are you sure that it's the eyepiece - does the blemish rotate when you rotate the EP against the body?) I see some heart-shaped darkening against the sky at 10 o'clock and some weaker ones at 11, 2 and 3 o'clock. Actually all of them could be out of focus clouds.

You could try to get a better picture by looking just through the EP on a piece of white paper lit from the side...

I think it could be fungus or water stains if the EP was used in very humid circumstances and condensating water could get on some surfaces.
If it is on one of the outside surfaces it could probably be cleaned quite easily with a q-tip and some isopropyl alcohol, but then you probably wouldn't ask here...

If it is inside, the EP needs to be taken apart and cleaned, which is a specialist job, especially so with zoom ones. If this is cost effective depends on the EP.

It would be interesting to know the type of scope and EP for further advice.

As Joachim has said, if you can tell us more about the eyepiece (a photo of the whole thing would be ideal) and also when it was purchased, we can work out if it is under any kind of warranty and/or whether it is worth returning to us to have it cleaned if necessary.

Cheers, Pete
