Took some shots of Bar-Tailed Godwits here in Northland New Zealand and a small number of birds had this strange bump about a third of the way up from the tip of there bill's. Anyone know what it is. I do know that a Godwits bill will flex up a little, can that be the cause?Waipu 7 Bar-Tailed Godwits 237.JPG

Just a thought, but could it just be a build-up of mud? If the bird puts its bill into the mud at roughly the same depth every time, could it just be building up in the same spot over a period of time?
