I saw a bird in flight from directly underneath. Body about 12" long, slender head and body...underbody black....black and white alternating wing feathers.
Can someone tell me what it might be?

Anything else? Bill or tail length? Size compared to other birds nearby? Juv Rook sometimes appear to have black and white wings? Was it a magpie? Was it on the coast or inland?

I HAVE NOW SEEN THIS BIRD AGAIN. THIS TIME THERE WERE THREE OF THEM. THEY WERE IN FLIGHT BUT I SAW THEM FROM ABOVE. THEY FLEW AND LANDED IN A TREE. THEY HAVE SLENDER BLACK BODIES AND HEADS. I WAS TOO FAR AWAY TO SEE BILLS OR LEGS/FEET. THEY HAVE BLACK AND WHITE ALTERNATING WING FEATHERS (VERTICAL STRIPES) WE HAD HIGH WINDS LAST WEEK SO MAYBE THESE BIRDS WERE BLOWN IN?

Sound like undernourished crows that have white wing feathers interspersed with the more usual black.
