I'm hoping someone can help (and that I've got this in the right area!).
Can anyone recommend a field guide for North America? I have a 20 year old National Geographic but, feel some of the plates are quite poor (especially the sparrows). We are thinking of taking a trip and would like to 'swot up' before we go.
Thanks.

The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds is full of masses of information and good pictures but it is laid out in a weird way, you have to keep flipping from section to section to get a discription, then a picture of a male of whichever specie and then to another part to find the female. It is annoying but a good guide nevertheless. There is one edition for the western region and another for the eastern region, author is Miklos Udvardy, published by Alfred A Knopf.
