Young Birder (2 Viewers)

I've seen Qial running across the road (annoyingly!) and have also seen them breeding on my old patch! Ive even heard the young sqeeking! Lol!
In my opinion this thread is for sicialising. Ive met loads of people on here (Joe, David, you Steve, etc...) Its a good thread where we can get things wrong and we don't have the adults moaning at us! I like it!

I'll have a moan instead;) i'm a grumpy old git at heart ;), btw, you got msn if you wanna socialise more?

I'm struggling to work out whats happened to my twitcher side, trumpeter and sprosser all local, and none really excite me enough to get worked up about them being mid week...here's to what the weekend brings:t: (9 gcse's down, 4 to go;))

Lee - how old are you and how long have you been birding? (ie, I'm envious that you have such a big list!)
 
Well according to BUBO, which doesn't lie, Tom Jordan's list is actually 231, that's playing by the rules that everyone else uses.

I'm 235 BOU, don't tick heard only (otherwise could have Lesser Pecker). Wonder how many people have ticked Gropper as heard only? Sure it wasn't a pylon?

Erm Iam 17 years old and have been birding since about 8 or 9 but only started twitching in 2005 so alot of my birds have come since then!
 
I also don't tick heard only's and that is why I kept on at the Thrush Nightingale in Dorset. Don't get me wrong alot of birds have a lovely song but I dnt fink it is the same than seeing them!

Yeah tom, joe nailed it with the first part of his post, why is there a difference of 7/seven/sept between your bubo (btw- you never told me you got that sprosser?) and your surfbirds, all i'm asking for is some clarification, can't be that hard?

Joe- Groppers? Easy, find a nice site make sure the habitat isn't to hard, cup your hands around your ears and triangulate the reeling bird with a mate, makes tracking a reeling bird a lot easier (although you risk your mate getting views and you not.) I was quite fortunate in the gloom I managed full frame scope views of it reeling it's head off in the long grass. Even showed some plumage detail. That was last year, haven't had it this year, but i've only been there at dusk once, due to obvious revision requiremnents.

steve as far as i am concerned joe is just bitching about me. there isnt a difference of 7 between my surfbirds and BUBO

i said to him on msn about 10 times that i have 231 birds logged on BUBO, but there are clearly a few that i've missed and ill check through later and find them. if he could be bothered to look before posting i went through this evening checking and ive got 237. whether there's one that i've still missed or if i miscounted my surfbirds score i don't know.

i'm not sure why i need to tell you about every bird i've seen, it would certainly be easier to let you know if you hadn't got me blocked on msn. ;)


Its only a list so get over it guys, I'm not interested in competitive listing, but really Joe accusing me of stringing etc when you're not even reading what i say is pretty harsh

And before you ask me 237 DOESN'T include anything at all 'unpure', it's BOU rules. Also I HAVE seen a Gropper, and it definately wasn't a pylon and I know that because I'm not blind.

Grow up Tom.
You've said to me that you didn't get a good enough view of the sprosser to be able to tick it. You've also ticked 3 heard only birds. You even said that your Surfbirds total might include feral Snow Goose and Black Swan.

To avoid all the 'confusion', why don't you go through Bubo again and put a tick in the boxes next to the species you've seen. Don't tick stuff you've heard, and then we can actually gain an idea at what your list actually is. Is that so very hard to do?
Struggling to see why this has become a debate when you could simply go on Bubo and sort out your list.

Well I wasn't "bitching" about you now was I, I just wanted clarification, which you have given me. Thanks, next time just take it with a laugh and dont dodge questions/get uppity with people, ok?
You don't need to tell me about every bird you see, but stuff like sprosser you know, it's just nice to leave a post on here or on your blog once in a while? (would you like me to explain why I blocked you agaiiiiiiiin?;))

Did joe actually accuse you of stringing or are you putting words into his mouth?

There's no harm in that, fair point. But all I'm saying is that Tom if you're going to enter a list into a competitive league, you may as well play by the rules that other people are using? Count what you want for your personal list, but moving several places ahead of other people when you are using different rules (it seems anything goes on your list) then surely I have a point here? Alternatively we could all play your way, please can I tick White Wagtail, Black Swan and heard-only Lesser Spotted Woodpecker?

For the record, no I didn't accuse anyone of stringing, I was merely questioning a couple of things.
 
What are peoples opinions on bird ringing. I am currently training for a C permit but haven't done much in a while. I don't mind people moaning at me; "it harms the birds and it doesn't get results, etc." I would just like to change the conversation a little!

Had 3 sessions ringing on the south coast last autumn. Starting again in a few weeks, exact same as you, training for a C permit :t:

Ringer? depends on your definition of it...(scroll down, between wildfowl and roving tit flock;))

I'm not, and while it looks like fun and'll give you a greater understanding of moult, ageing and topography, I don't think i'd be very good at it, cos I got fingers like sausages!;)

Anyone going to Fair isle for a dodgy escape?
