Birding Appin, Argyll (1 Viewer)

Young birder from Dundee
Away to Port Appin, Argyll this October and im wondering if anyone can give me some good birding areas round about that area.

Hi RB. I spent a week in Port Appin 4 or 5 years ago with nothing really standing out birdwise. Having said that it was very much a family holiday first and wildlife watching a distant second.

I didn't get a chance to catch the ferry to Lismore which could have potential. Of course Oban is nearby with ferries to Mull.

If you're staying in Port Appin I would recommend the food at the Pierhouse Hotel. Pretty decent seafood there and a great location.

Have a good trip,

Rich

Thanks Rich
Iv'e been there a couple of times before and have stayed at the Airds and the Pierhouse (and yes the food is great, especially the mussels :-O). We also go to Lismore most times but back then I wasn't paying much attention to the birdlife. Im also trying to persuade my parents to go to Mull or Iona for a day.

Hi Glen - what a wonderful place to go, no wonder you want to keep returning.

I haven't actually been there but passed nearby once though that was in the Spring. This area is very under-reported but I should imagine you'd see many of the species you'd find on Mull; perhaps divers and Black Guillemots and a chance of both eagles too of course.

Hi Glen. Fully agree about the mussels - they are great. If you don't drive then many of the wildlife watching trips on Mull pick up from Craignure. The price of the ferry is then greatly reduced if you're a foot passenger.
