Juvenile Great Spotted - note the large white shoulder patch (Lesser would have white barring across the back)

Definitely a juvenile GSW. LSW would have far more barring on it's wings and on it's back.

Dead chicks

.In small damp woodland on moor edge. Found two recently dead chicks possibly Woodcock/Snipe , no obvious sign of predation.
On a brighter note at least 4 Cuckoos seen and heard also Redstarts seen.

I think the chick may be a Woodcock, a shame either way.

Looking at a few pics of both for some reason the chicks head patterns dont seem to quite replicate those of the the adults, so oddly the pale face with forward stripes seems to fit Woodcock over Snipe.
The damp woodland location would be a better fit for Woodcock too.

Adam my first thoughts were Woodcock habitat where found and I actually saw woodcock take off in same area, the head stripes threw me. I think they probably are Woodcock chicks.

Couple of hours at Shields and Souter today.
Only 3 common & 1 sandwich tern near the pier/beach, also juv, pied wagtail and the usual gulls.
Good number of nesting Cormorant, kittiwak, razorbill etc, at Lizard point.

Derwent Valley & A68

A visit to Derwent Valley Wood Warbler fledglings in oak canopy getting fed off parent birds. x2 Cuckoo along moorland edge. A pair of Buzzards calling over Muggleswick woods. Plenty bird song but most birds in cover.
Non birds x4 Small Pearl Bordered Fritillaries, and a mating pair Green Hairstreaks at Burnhill site off A68.

Lost Monopod

Bit of a request from a friend of mine who isn't a member of the forum.
Anyway they were at Far Pasture today 18/06/13 and were in the lane adjacent the wood yard watching the kites and roe deer in adjacent field. However they had parked in the entrance to the wood yard - when the owner turned up. They moved the car and the wood yard owner allowed them to park inside the yard - but when they moved the car they left a Gitzo monopod half way along the lane - completely forgot about it and after a good natter with the wood yard owner drove off leaving the monopod against the fence half way along the lane.

If anyone was in the area today and has found said monopod if you send me a PM with your contact details and i'll pass those on to the owner who will be extremely grateful to get it back..

Thanks in advance

I hope they have better luck than I did when I left my monopod in a hide at Slimbridge two years ago...
