Having been using a used D50 with the older version of the 80-400vr lense and am looking at opinions on a uograde setup. See my ideas:

1. D90
2. D5300

was planning on buying the updated 800-400vr. My idea wasbuying a decent piece of glass would be money better spent than a high end body.

IMHO you can do much better for your money.

D7100 (for the excellent AF not the restricted buffer), 300/4 and x1.4 and x1.7 convertors.

I would get a D7100 and see how it goes with your existing lens. It should improve it. If you want more resolution then change to 300f4 and TC1.4 or the new 80-400vr which is superb wide open with the D7100.
