Durham Birding (3 Viewers)

Grebe Display

Thanks for posting these lovely images............. this courtship display is one of the nicest bird rituals one can see. We saw a pair a few years ago on whittle Dene Reservoir. So far, they haven't returned.

Couple of hours at Hetton Lyons today, after hearing that there was a possible 4 GC Grebes on the pond.
Well, there was 3 present amongst the usual ducks and BH gulls.
Thought they were going to give a full display a couple of times, but they were constantly disturbed by the gulls and coots. Each time they were comming up with weed the gulls would attack, thinking It was a fish.
Did manage to see part of the display, and they even managed to pass a bit weed between themselves a couple of times, but that was It :C.

Maybe next time.

I'm sure everyone saw the one in Yorkshire but just in case you didn't or want to have another look at a cracking bird, there's a female Black-throated Thrush in the Croft on Hartlepool Headland as of 08:20

Has been seen to sing so not a female at all. It's a 1st winter male making it a different bird to the long stayer at Newholm

Black-throated Thrush showing well this afternoon in the Putting Green, Hartlepool Headland.

Gents - please assist an almost-Scot with where the putting green is on the headland.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi Gordon,

Click on this hyperlink: http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=hartlepool%2C+county+Durham&countryCode=GB#map=54.69523,-1.18241|18|32&bd=useful_information&loc=GB:54.6947:-1.1839:14|NZ527336|NZ527336

If you look on the map you should see two grassy areas behind the red circle. The one on the left with the houses in front on the grass is where the Black-throated Thrush is.

If you get there and cannot find where I am talking about find "Verrills" fish shop and opposite it is a grassy/park area. The grassy area next to this is where the Black-thraoted Thrush is.

I hope this helps,
Andrew K:t:

Fantastic bird and a county tick for me.

Nothing (yet) on Birdguides re Bt T. No sign, or simply no reports?

i was at the croft from 7 too just after 9 with no sign, more and more people turned up and covered all the likely spots on the headland with no luck, the general talk was that the bird had moved on with the clear night we had last night.

the general talk was that the bird had moved on with the clear night we had last night.

Yeah seems that way. If a few people were searching I would have thought it would be rediscovered. It seems to be a recurring event with migrants at Hatlepool Headland. The Bluethroat last year only stayed a day as well. Mind you I can remember reading the Dusky Thrush all them years ago stuck around for a few months:-O

The Black Throated Thrush was there at about 2pm this afternoon when I arrived. It flew off towards the Town Hall after a couple of minutes then returned for a short time then flew off in the same direction.

This was my first proper 'twitch' and I think I was lucky to see it!
