Premium Seeds? (1 Viewer)

What's the difference between premium bird seed and the value bird seed sold in supermarkets? (I have black oil sunflower seeds in mind)

My understanding is that the bargain birdseed tends to be a lot older--maybe from last year's harvest rather than this year's. So it's less fresh and less appealing to the birds. I've found myself that on the occasions when I've broken down and bought sunflower seed at the local store rather than making the trek across town to Wild Birds Unlimited, it doesn't go over so well. The birds only eat it as a last resort if nothing better's available.

Incidentally, it's a particularly bad idea to buy bargain-basement nyjer, since nyjer goes stale fast.

I always try to buy from RSPB as then at least I know (a) it's good stuff, and (b) where the profit margin is going. Second to that I'd go to a specialist.
