I know that these are Young Northern Cardinal, but are they male or female and are they first year? Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Both photos were taken September of 2005 in southeastern Virginia.
Camera = Canon 20D with 400 f5.6L lens and a Velbon carbon fiber tripod.

Judging from the darkish bill, whitout any red, and obvious wear and colour contrast in the flight feathers it´s a Juvenile moulting to 1st basic (HY).
Apparently HY have a partial or a complete moult in autumn.
