Yorkshire Birding (18 Viewers)

How miserable is ths weather? Really poor light both days in Birstall. Went for a walk in the woods at the back yesterday, lots of activity birds making most of the light I suppose. Two F GSW knocking ten bells out of each other was good to watch, only realised there was a third when they flew off. Nuthatch and a good selection of tits, 5 Moorhen on the pond investigating a branch that had blown in the night before, incredibly interesting to them. Had a ride out for the Waxwings in Stourton but couldn't find 'em. There was a yard which had four or five Rowan completely stripped but 250 would do that sharpish, stopped off at Ardsley res on the way back, good numbers of gulls there but only Common and BHG as far as I could tell. Male Goldeneye close in with attendant gulls waiting to harrass himif caught something.

Today has been a complete wash out so I did the food shop instead. Got back and saw Waxwings in Birstall so had a ride round looking at the likely spots, drew a blank. Anyone got details?

Heres to the longer days!

Idle get hasn't updated yet, we're still reading about his car ;)

Forgot to mention this bit and it is going to sound really sad but what the hell? On my patch walk yesterday I found my favourite branch had been brought down by the local hoodlums. Actually not really a branch but a secondary trunk from an oak tree. Favourite because it was about 10' long, about 8" in diameter but had about 7 fully excavated GSW holes crammed into it one every 18". Water had got into them and rotted them through leaving a hollow trunk but I've looked at it each time I've done a patch walk over the last eight years. On the good side I'm taking a log saw down tomorrow and bringing a woodpecker nest hole home!

Only passing on info from a friend but believe they were near the "folly" [the thing that look like a ruin].

3 Lesser Redpolls by the car park, and 6 flying betwaeen the row of hollies and the folly area landing in a cypress where 2 Goldcrest.

Twitched the Treecreeper as an East Park tick. Bumped into Nathan Pickering who put news out. The Treecreeper appears to be the nominate Fenno-scandian race familiaris: clean white below, and with a broad white supercilium that flares upwards behind the eye. Also Grey Wagtail and Sparrowhawk and the previously mentioned 19 Goosander.

Earlier 9 Waxwings in Atlas square near Flinton, but soon flew off.

Appeared to be 2 Great Northern Divers late afternoon Welton Waters

I noticed that it was clean white below too, I just thought it had had a good bath!
I do agree with you on that...
Didn't notice supercilium (I only got a brief couple of seconds on the bird at distance.)

Thanks for the news on the Divers at Welton Waters, Geoff. No time today but hopefully less hectic day tomorrow.
No sign of the Treecreeper, Teal or Pintail East Park today.
Two Little Egrets Swinemoor, Beverley. Surprisingly first record I know for the site so another commitment tomorrow.
Only other record in the "Valley" is 8+ Waxwings at Priory Park, Hessle.

Having missed the 250 in Leeds I have an hour free first thing, may pay a flying visit to the Huddersfield 150 tomorrow, anyone know which street they are on?

Hi Jim,

Thornton Lodge in the Mecca Casino car park on St. Thomas's Rd. Good luck, at least 150 should be fairly easy to track down
Cheers
