Sorry i have no pic but think i can manage a pretty good description.

it was sparrow sized and similar colour except for white-ish lines on the wing and a bright yellow line above each eye.

Is it possibly a yellowhammer or am i completely wrong?

It was in my parents garden which has alot of houses to the back but a railway track and open marshy land to the front. There are also a few trees and really high grasses there too.

We might need a little more to go on Rosie!

Whitish lines make me think of Linnet but not the yellow super! Can we rule out a Warbler species here?

How about a Siskin?

sorry! never quite manage a pic too slow!!
There are a few warblers about i've heard them but only ever seen one willow

check the Siskin photo on the link, Rosie ... possibly fits with your description

it was the same as tha only less yellow which i am sure there are bound to be variations in colouration
