Hello from Costa rica

'llo All,

A colleague of mine took the attached picture of a (young) tiger heron while on vacation in Costa Rica in September last year.

Can anyone confirm which one it is Rufescent or bare throated tiger heron?

Can anyone give some good pointers for identifying the young birds of these 2 species?

Cheers,

filip

A perfect example of the truly international nature of birdforum - a query from Belgium, about a Costa Rican bird, and answered from Indonesia! Outstanding!

I'd also say Bare-throated Tiger-Heron. Attached for comparison is a photo of a Bare-throated Tiger-Heron that I took several years ago in Mexico.

I also think is a Bare-throated, apparent lack of rufous on the upperparts plus darker looking cap look good for it. Also Bare-throated is much commoner in CRica ;) , but juveniles of both species can be very similar and is hard to be sure 100% with this image. Location in Costa Rica helps a lot. If pic was taken on the pacific side then it´s Bare-throated, if on the caribbean...
there´s both there and id becomes more difficult.

Hi Randall and welcome to Birdforum. We are building up quite a few people here now from Central America and other parts of the Neotropics. I look forward to hearing more about your birding experiences on Birdforum.
