Canon SX50 viewfinder fault (1 Viewer)

My Powershot SX50 has developed a fault, I think. The flip-out screen is suddenly showing everything upside down! I don't recall dropping it or knocking it recently. Any ideas?

The manual says "Open the screen to activate it when the camera is on. This will deactivate the viewfinder. Similarly, close the screen (facing the camera body) to deactivate it and activate the viewfinder" Sounds like it should be automatic to me.
