Goosander or Red-Breasted Merganser, Scotland (1 Viewer)

Female Goosander as has already been said. Note the sharp division between the brown and grey on the neck where as the female Red Breasted Merganser has a more diffuse border.

It doesn't look at all like a Hooded Merganser to me. I agree with Common Merganser (or Goosander, as they are apparently known in Scotland).

Nobody's suggested Hooded Merganser--you need to read the preceding posts more carefully. It's amazing how threads can twist and turn sometimes!

I originally thought the two previous posts to mine were suggesting Hooded Merganser but I guess the first of the two was just a question about them (which seems a little odd to me in a thread about Common Mergansers) and caused me to think that was the ID they were suggesting.

I think the "Same as you" quote from the second of the posts makes it open to interpretation since the first of the two posts did not reply to their own question with "Hooded Merganser" so what is the quote actually referring to or what does it really mean? Maybe I'm being dense but that's the reason for my interpretation.

My apologies for misinterpreting a post or two--assuming I did.

Can't really see the ambiguity myself. Steveo asked what we called Hooded Mergansers in the UK. I replied that we give them the same name, Hooded Merganser.

The subject bird, of course, is a Goosander, called a Common Merganser in the US. Neither of us were suggesting otherwise, as Fugl said.

I was simply curious and asked a very simple question. Bitter answered it. You can see that he is specifically answering my question because he quotes it. Many threads develop into other similar or non related subjects some people don't like it but it happens considering this is a public forum.
