From my experience with my Eos bodies, and EF lenses, I would always recommend optimising the AF-MA settings for your birding lenses. I've spent hours in the garden, and more hours at the local lake doing this. At least when I do get a decent shot, it's not wasted due to focusing errors.
Experiment shooting at higher ISOs than you're comfortable with. You might be surprised that using a higher shutter speed is better than a little grain; or of course, you might not! Try a new birding site - different cover, birds, challenges.
Tempting birds to where you want them. A stick for kingfishers to perch on, some food on a feeder, or on the ground etc. Bird calls if you know what you're doing... etc.
