Top 20 Most Wanted Birds.......what's your wanted list? (1 Viewer)

Andy Wraithmell

aka Limeybirder
In the event of dying from boredom before going to work I was interested to see if any other birders keep a 20 most wanted list. I do!!! Here it is in no particular order

Wandering Albatross
Diademed Sandpiper Plover
Andean Condor
Andean Cock-of-the Rock
Snow Petrel
Gurney's Pitta
Kookaburra
Lyrebird
Egyptian Plover
Spoonbill Sandpiper
Harpy Eagle
Resplendant Quetzal
Bee Hummingbird
Spectacled Eider
Steller's Sea Eagle
Red-legged Kittiwake
Shoebill
Hawk Owl
Moussier's Redstart
Ivory-billed Woodpecker

I've chalked up only one so far (must get out more!) Wandering Albatross on a pelagic off South Africa a few years ago. A few of them should be relatively easy but some will be hard and will require vast amounts of spondoolies. Where's my piggy bank? :egghead:

Maybe depending on replies we could count the votes and come up with a birdforum top 20 most wanted?

heres mine -

Nightingale
Hawfinch
Jack Snipe
Long-tailed Skua
Pomarine Skua
Sooty Shearwater
Pallas Warbler
Bean Goose
Capercaillie
Ptarmigan
Dotterel
Golden Oriole
Lapland Bunting
Quail
Woodlark
Stone Curlew
Montagu's Harrier
Bee-eater
Roller
Bluethroat

As you can probably see there are obvious holes in my life list. If I got the first 16 birds from this list I would be totally and utterly over the moon for the rest of my life.

Any help on the first 16 would be appreciated. 8-P

Hi John

drop me a PM if you're ever heading over to Norfolk - 3 of them should be getable here in the winter and a further 5 in spring.

I've managed two on your list, Limeybirder, (although there are in fact four species of kookaburra and two lyrebirds). Laughing Kookaburra you'd see within hours of arriving at any east coast city in Australia, as there are an estimated 65 million individuals n Australia and they are not exactly inconspicuous!

Here's 10 off the top of my head:
My definite no. 1 is Black Grasswren, an endemic of remote northern Western Australia. I will see it one day.
Inaccessible Island Rail
Plains-wanderer
Long-tailed Ground Roller
either Picathartes/Rockfowl
Magellanic Plover
Cape Rockjumper
Flame Bowerbird
Wilson's Bird-of-Paradise (or pretty much any, I've seen one BOP, but not well)
Kagu

E

my top 20 wants list is...

Fea's petrel
roller
snowy owl
wallcreeper
sibe rubythroat
red-flank bluetail
pallid swift
Hudsonian godwit
golden-winged warbler
cream-coloured courser
white-throated needletail
black and white warbler
Siberian thrush
Maramora's warbler
isabelline wheatear
rufous bush robin
great spotted cuckoo
red-rumped swallow
ivory gull
Wilson's phalarope

all in the UK please....

Parula
Long-tailed Shrike

and an addition to the British list: Black-shouldered Kite

Just watch me go into twitch mode when the next one of these turns up...

Well Ive been trying hard all summer to find the White-tailed Ptarmigan so I have to say he's number one. Others I'm after locally include Boreal Owl, Great Gray Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, any Rosy Finch, Bohemian Waxwing, Common and Hoary Redpolls.

In South America still looking for Harpy Eagle, Eared Trogon; better views of Lovely Cotinga (and any other Cotingas), several of the Hawk-Eagles, Andean Condor, and King Vulture.

Haven't even started a dream list for Oz, Asia, Europe, or Africa - too busy trying to find a lot of the ABA birds yet!

Whitehead's Trogon, Broadbill, Spiderhunter (will try in 3 weeks)
Marvelous Spatuela Tail
Crimson Topaz
Lappet-Faced Vulture (or any old world one)
Secretary Bird
Speckled Mousebird
Carmine Bee-eater (for my wife)
Numfor Paradise Kingfisher
Volgelkop Bower (The Bower, not the bird)
King of Saxony, Wilson's, Black Sicklebill, 12 Wired BOP
White Tern
Rifleman
Magellanic Woodpecker
Sunbittern
Red-Billed Ground Cuckoo
