gulls (2 Viewers)

After checking throught the images of this bird I have found an admittedly poor shot of it as it flew off over the nearby pool. But you can see the pale inner primaries and the tail pattern,

Perhaps, although Rough-leg like pattern would better fit a Lesser Black-backed gull?

But the legs are quite long on the subject bird. But it doesn't really have a Caspian feel to it.

Cheers,

Andy.

depending on age and sex of RLB, if we're going to be pedantic: juvs have a washed black band, ad. males a clear cut narrower with 2-3 additional bars proximally, ad. females usually have a clear cut single black subterminal band. this is what i usually refer as being RLG tail pattern, i.e. similar to mich or cach.

Indeed I had one of each on a very good day in Norfolk this year (juv + male + female) but most birds here are juveniles.

and you can see the paler GC tips. it's a small female cachinnans. :t:

Maybe. Maybe.

But even in a blurred image, I'd expect to see those tell-tale subterminal bands on the tail that fit Cach and Mich which the subject bird doesn't show. However, the band isn't that broad which doesn't really fit LBBG. But does it fit Caspian either?

Still could be LBBG though:

One of mine:

http://www.kentos.org.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=1855

andscaps pattern, tertials with broadish white thumbnail not reaching up to GC

Well note this bird:

http://www.gull-research.org/lbbg2cyb/s2red2cyfebsept.html

which has very similar scapulars (pattern and colour) as well as similar coverts,

The subject bird doesn't strike me as being one of these:

Those inner primaries aren't particularly striking on the subject bird.

but I accept it could be any one of four species....

Cheers,

Andy.

update on cach+mich website

for those interested in cachs and michs - i have completed all cachinnans galleries (with the available pics i have) and am currently uploading 1st cycle michs. mostly from the large fundus of photos i have received from cristian (thanks!). most have some commenting text below. please always go on "larger resolution available" to see the pics properly (sharp, if they're sharp;)). in the last time i often puzzled some pics together to achieve the minimum resolution of 1200x pxl. for the higher resolution function, that's why. enjoy:

April 4th - I was surprised to find again Jamie's bird (after more then 40 days). This time I managed to take some closer shots.

statistically - the first april pics of a 4-5cy cach from romania ;)
strange white spots (staining?) on tips of p7 and p8; and it looks as if it just dipped its bill in some raspberry gem.

Another interesting fact is that, since February 19th - the day when we discovered it, I've spotted this bird several times in the same (and very small) area.

superb views on a "1st summer" male, funny the 4th pic with the fish in its crop and a nice view on richly marked rectrices in the last pic.

Hi Lou,
For a tyro anxious to learn and keep up, and always follows these Gull discussions,
please explain acronyms :- RLB and RLG?
Thanks
Robin

RLG is wrong, it should have been the same RLB = Rough-legged Buzzard with its white tail and black subterminal band as an association to caspian/YLG tail pattern.

Apologies for what are likely to be the worst photos ever added to this thread, but I think this could well be a 2nd winter northern argentatus Herring Gull.

Photos taken at Musselburgh, Scotland, on 3rd April. Essentially it was a large pale bird with glaucous-like bill with dark markings restricted to subterminal tailband and outer primaries and coverts. The striking features were the lack of dark markings on secondaries and overall pale plumage.

Any thoughts, although it is hard to be definitive with these images(!).

Geoff
