Iran
Saw it 2 days ago in north of Iran. It seems to have a shorter neck than the Whooper on the right.
Thank you in advance

Agree all Whoopers (apart from the pelican and the ducks before Nutcracker chips in ;))

Too big and too much yellow on the bill for Bewick's.

Mick

Another pic from one of my fellow birding friends. Another whooper(the right one)?

I'm trying to find a Bewick's among Whoopers and Mutes!
Pics are from the same flock. Still no Bewick's?

Agree all whoopers - must say I'm amazed how similar northern Iran looks to my local area - wouldn't think twice if you'd said the shots were taken at Druridge Bay :)

That pelican looks a mite out of place for Northumbs, though! o:D

A lot more ducks than Druridge has too ;)

It the first photo and fourth of the last group of 5 photos there are 3 swans. Two whoopers with a much smaller bird with a lot less yellow on the bill, surely a Bewick's. Great selection of wildfowl with gadwall, teal. shoveller, pintail , greylag, mute, Bewick's and Whooper swans.

'Fraid not; it's a (probably subadult) Whooper - the pointed end of the yellow is a bit muddied with some blackish markings, but it's not a Bewick's pattern.

An ID pointer about Whooper bill-patterns, is that the yellow area points sharply forward into the black bill-tip, with an obtuse, extreme triangle. You may get much variation on this, but Bewick's generally don't show this sharp incursion, at an angle, into the black tip-area. It rounds out, and back, before the nostril. Whereas WS continues underneath, in a sharp point, ending near the bill tip. Yes, we all know this, and there are other ID pointers. But, it's worth bringing up again here. Also Whoopers prefer Orange Marmalade, whilst Bewick's swear by the three fruits recipe! If I were a Swan? I'd go for the original Portuguese Quince recipe! :cat:
