Great photos Paul. Love the head on ones that show the intricacy of the colours on the head. At first glance it just looks like a contrast of peachy-orange and jet black, but at closer inspection you can see that the crown is broad and charcoal-coloured, and bordered by jet-black stripes on either side, it also has sexy white eyebrows.

I thought initially the Yorks bird may be the same as the Shetland bird, but in duller light.

Is there much/any difference between plumage of male and female?

Svensson simply says:-

Sex - Only extremes can be picked out without a series of specimens at hand for comparison.
Male - Sides of crown brownish-black to Blackish.
Female - Sides of crown dark brown.

Age - It might be that 1Y birds are less vividly rufous on mantle/back on average than adult, but this needs verification.

I had read somewhere though that ageing may be possible by eye colour?
